Ernest Hill Wines is a family owned and operated wine business, situated at the gateway to the Hunter Valley's famous Pokolbin District.
The original vineyard of 60 acres (24 hectares) approx. was planted in the early 1970's by Harry Tulloch for Seppelts Wines and was later renamed the Pokolbin Creek Vineyard. The vineyard was subdivided in 1998 and the Wilson family purchased the hill top part of the vineyard in 1999 and renamed it Ernest Hill Vineyard.
Ross and Jason Wilson commenced making wine in 2002 under the Ernest Hill label. Two wines were produced, the Cyril Semillon and the Alexander Chardonnay. We added a verdelho, gewurztraminer and shiraz to the range in 2003. In the 2004 vintage we added a late picked semillon. Since then the range has been expanded to include two Merlots, a reserve Shiraz, a Tempranillo, a Cabernet Sauvignon, a Moscato style dessert wine, a late picked Gewurztraminer, a liqueur Muscat and a sparkling Chardonnay.
The philosophy at Ernest Hill is to produce PREMIUM estate grown Hunter Valley wines. The majority of our grapes are hand picked, to ensure only the best bunches are selected to go into our wine. We deliberately restrict the crop to ensure less bunches of better quality fruit and we only pick the blocks each year which meet our demanding quality control standards. The best parcels of brand new oak barrels are procured each year for our chardonnay and red wines. All these little steps combine to give our wines better varietal character and most importantly superb flavours.
We pride ourselves on our range of award winning, limited edition wines that we sell direct to the public online, by mail order, and at our cellar door.
